COVID-19 OUTBREAK SITUATION REPORT

Yesterday, the WHO Director-General in his regular media briefing
characterized COVID-19 as a pandemic. As of 10th March 2020, a
total of 113,702 confirmed cases were reported (71.2% of cases in
China) and 4,012 deaths.

Number of countries/ territories/areas affected within the last 48 hours
increased by 5 countries (Brunei Darussalam, Mongolia, Cyprus,
Guernsey and Panama) making a total of 110 countries.

SITUATION REPORT IN NIGERIA
  • On the 11th of March 2020, no new confirmed case of COVID-19
    recorded in Nigeria.

  • Cumulatively, there are fifty-one (51) confirmed cases of COVID-19 in
    Nigeria.

  • Apart from the index case, a total of 40 people have been screened
    for COVID-19 (7 new) in 5 States (Edo, Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, FCT and
    Kano) out of which 39 tested negative and have been ruled out, while
    one confirmed positive which is a contact of an index case with no death.
  • 
The two confirmed cases are clinically stable at the designated
    treatment facility for COVID-19 at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH),
    Yaba, Lagos.

  • A multi-sectoral national emergency operations center (EOC),
    activated at level 3, continues to coordinate the national response
    activities.

  • Global situation: As of 10th March 2020, a total of 113,702
    confirmed cases reported (71.2% cases in China) and 4,012 deaths.
    Number of countries/territories/areas affected within the last 24 hours
    increased by 5 countries (Brunei Darussalam, Mongolia, Cyprus,
    Guernsey and Panama) making a total of 110 countries.

  • Eleven of 54 countries in Africa with reported cases; Algeria, Egypt,
    Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, Cameroon, Burkina
    Faso, Togo and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

  • WHO has described the situation as a pandemic.
EPIDEMIOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION

On 27th February, a 44-year-old Italian citizen was diagnosed of
COVID-19 in Lagos State. On 8th March 2020, 40 asymptomatic
contacts to the index case and under quarantine were tested for
SARS-CoV-2 following WHO recommendations. One of the contacts in
Ogun was confirmed positive and is currently receiving care at IDH,
Lagos.

The case is the first to be reported in Nigeria since the first confirmed
case was reported from China in January 2020. The case arrived at the
Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at 10 pm on 24th
February 2020 aboard Turkish Airlines from Milan, Italy. He traveled
to his company site in Ogun state on 25th February. On 26th February,
he presented at the staff clinic in Ogun and there was a high index of
suspicion by the managing physician. He was referred to IDH Lagos
and COVID-19 was confirmed on 27th February.
